Went to see Anjin or 家康と按針 yesterday night. It was really wonderful and a well put on production. I wholeheartedly recommend this play to anyone who has an interest in Japanese Culture/History.
It tells the story of William Adams an Englishman who arrives in Japan on a Dutch ship, through fate he becomes close to Tokugawa Ieyasu’s and helps Ieyasu learn new things. In response, Ieyasu gives Adams, now named, Muira Anjin, a samurai role and land.
The play contains epic samurai battles, set design and story. The actors really bring this period to life and you feel as if you have been transported 400 years into the past.
2013 is the 400th anniversary of Adams landing in Japan. Please go see if you are able to - the play is at Sadler’s Wells Theatre until Feb 9th
